I’m surprised the new embassy did not cost quite a bit more. The embassy of the United States in Mexico City has always been one of their most important embassies of our country around the world partially because of its location, just south of our country and just north of South America and Central America but it’s a major center for intelligence gathering that’s imperative for the security of not only the United States, but that of the rest of the world. But the biggest expense in building an embassy representing the most powerful nation on earth is in the technology and protective high-tech construction methods that must be undertaken to ensure the structure itself is not been compromised in any way by a foreign entity. In fact in the past, we’ve built entire embassies that have never been used because they have been found to be littered with information gathering electric electronic equipment from the host country. It’s not an easy task.

This is a monument for US Big Business that seeks to exploit Mexico for cheap labor costs, lax environmental standards and a dysfunctional justice system that lets them do whatever they want without repercussion.

When I lived in Mexico City 1968-70 we often referred to our embassy as “gestapo headquarters” as it was at the time of the Cold War, after the Cuban Missile Crisis, during the Vietnam War and with many problems after the ’68 Olympics in Mexico…lots of concerns, one of the USAs largest intelligence gathering centers in the world…and still is today. One of our station chiefs may have established a record for service time there too. Mexico is a vital partner for the USA and likewise for the Mexicans. We will need to always work to improve our two countries relationship as they are so interconnected and vital. “Mexico so far from god but close to the US”
