I also love Mexico. My husband, Mexican-American, calls me his “Mexican wannabe”! We live part-time in Guanajuato, Gto. I love the country and believe that you could travel here for the rest of your life and not see everything. There is so much history, culture, music, archeology, folk art, and colors! Not to mention some of the best food in the world!! I am sure you have made the right decision for you and your family. Oh ya… Xalapa is a beautiful city. I have visited there only once, but it is memorable!

I have a very different situation. You might be interested in.

It turns out that my grandmother was born in Mexico and my father had dual citizenship but at that time you had either to be Mexican or American. He chose to be American. Now my wife and I decided to look at retiring in Mexico. Wow, my daughter was doing some genealogy research. She came across my grandmother‘s birth certificate. The problem was my father had divorced my mother early in my life so I really didn’t have much of his influence. We had always heard rumors that my grandmother’s born in Mexico. I receive my temporal and then realize that I was eligible for Mexican citizenship. I went through the process and now have dual citizenship. There’s been lots of struggles as I have had to deal with having two different curb numbers and having difficulty getting my INE and my passport, but those are simple things will overcome. I’m really grateful for my Mexican heritage. My grandmother‘s birth certificate states she was born in 1905 before the Revolution. As it turns out, my grandmother was part of the Mormons, who came to Chihuahua to set up a colony. Poncho Via forced them to leave Mexico, a very interesting story, but I’m very grateful to be living here in Mexico.

I’m one of those ‘not many Americans here’ and quietly enjoy that, as I work remotely for a San Francisco tech company.
