I think there are severe problems with the water supply, as pointed out by others here. But where is the infrastructure? How are they planning to get the copper to a port? there is no train.They surely aren’t going to try to truck it all out of there on Highway one.

Looks like about 80 miles(130 km) to the gulf, and it sounds like the aquifer may not hold 9 million cubic meters to remove annually. Short answer Robert, is that Chile is using sea water to mine copper in one of Earth’s driest places, but they must desalinate it first.
What does it mean that there is already a 500,000 cubic meter (132 million gallons) deficit? Are wells running dry? It takes about 100,000 gallons of water to extract and process one ton of copper, 50 gallons per pound. Copper mining is considered a water-intensive process due to the large volume of water needed for various stages like ore grinding, flotation, and leaching.
It looks like there is not enough fresh water there to do the job, the mine will take all and still need more

If you don’t like copper mining then stop buying copper. Don’t buy a house, don’t buy a car, don’t buy electronics, don’t be a hypocrite.

This mine is a definite NO to our state BCS! It keeps rearing its ugly head and the people keep opposing it.
Listen to the people because once this land is destroyed it won’t come back.

Not a good idea messing with aquifers under a desert. There will be so many unintended consequences. I wonder where the natural watershed boundaries lie of the area of the proposed mine.
