It seems strange to hear the Spanish language version of the English songs I know. The Mexicans I know do most of the present opening on Christmas Eve and not “everyone” goes to midnight mass. Certainly not the family I spend Christmas with. They sit around a table drinking drinking Dos Equis and Victoria and various other drinks, as do I.

Three Kings Day (or All Kings Day) is officially January 6. Some families may celebrate it the evening before just as some in the US celebrate Christmas on Christmas Eve. Some families do exchange little gifts or “stocking stuffers” on Christmas and many families with children will allow them one gift on Christmas and the rest on Three Kings Day. Every family however has established their own holiday traditions over time — old and new. The different ways people celebrate the season is fascinating, but that’s a different article. Maybe next year?

“El día de Reyes” (king’s day) is January 5th eve ( never Jan 3rd).
There is a tradition of mostly small gifts given on Christmas Eve. In the past gifts were given in the name of “El niño Dios”. Globalization influenced a shift to Santa Claus.
