I love Mexico. I’ve visited every major city as well as 50+ Pueblo Magicos and my choice for a long-term stay would be Guadalajara. It uniquely checks all boxes. Beautiful city. Great food/restaurants. Museums. Lovely parks. Nice climate. Affordable housing. Fabulous nearby hiking. Safe and clean, for the most part. And ideally located. The GDL airport is easy. A huge plus. Lake Chapala is just 30 min south. Jalisco is also home to 7 Pueblos Magicos (Tapalpa, for one, is a gem). There’s a new road connecting GDL with Puerto Vallarta (4 hrs) making it easy to get to the coast by car. And for those interested in plant medicine, Mexisoul Retreats, on a farm outside of Tepatitlan, offers the perfect ayahuasca experience. All in all, you can’t go wrong with Guadalajara.

It is the most Americanized city and I feel almost nothing Mexican about it and I don’t understand the obsessions people have. I’ve been there a few times and the modernism, I was not impressed.

Well, Lara on the other hand citizen one and each one has his own flavour and culture that you feel like you are travelling around the country. You’re still the same. Everyone mentions the mariachi which is important however there are so many other offerings from the eclectic art in Tonala, including Talavera, watch your dishes being made in the factory. Or Talequepaque, Just so rich in history and religious culture in with the new traditions and one of the best day of The dead festivals that I’ve been to. I’m just glad Perto Vallarta was not mentioned because it’s so overrated and so overtaken by foreigners, they are building on top of each other and it has lost its term other than the cobblestone street sidewalk that break your ankles once a paradise has become just another tourist trap and, hang out

Not to mention, last I heard, metro Monterrey’s population was larger than metro Guadalajara although they may be close in size. Which is not to take anything away from the wonderful Jalisco capital city of artists, Mariachi music and flowers.
