Fascinating….”trickle-down” economics at its vernacular best. I used to live by Neptunio and Dragones years ago. Saludos desde Acapulco!

The act of “riding” a tourist, i.e, squeezing money out of a tourist in return for dating, sexual favor etc. Unlike straightforward prostitution, having a kind of a relationship with a jinetera or jinetero can take a semblance of a real, non transactional, relationship. A Non Spanish speaking tourist might not even realize the real nature of this relationship, or not even that there is a transaction, thinking it’s a legit relationship. Commonly the tourist provides some type of financial assistance and inevitably some of the money that the jinetera or jinetero earns find its way to other Cubans i.e, the family, neighbours, friends of the Jinetera or Jinetero who are fully aware, aiding and abetting in duping an unsuspecting tourist. This can go on with multiple tourists in succession. Unfortunately, continuing poor socio-economical conditions in Cuba are the source and driver for the endurance of ‘Jinitear’ phenomenon.

First time a guy asked me that I said no, we don’t have calcetines. He pointed to a box of condoms and we both burst out laughing 😂😂😂
