I’ve heard bits and pieces of the story. Culiacán sounds sad and desperate. Mazatlán, by contrast, feels safe and normal. I read the news and talk to my local friends. Some outbreaks of violence feel isolated, yet too close for comfort. Some people were shot in Lomas de Mazatlán recently. I hear rumours of kidnappings. I notice that a young “car wash guy” has disappeared, and worry about him. Seems like 2008 again. I pray that the Sinaloa cartel will somehow resolve this power struggle, before another cartel moves in.
